Closet Organizers buying guide

How Do You Measure a Closet Before Buying Storage?

Measure width, rod height, and depth first, then match shelves, drawers, or dividers to what you store.

Quick answer

Measure three things before buying closet storage: interior width, rod height from the floor, and shelf depth. Then match the format to what you store — drawers for small folded items, bins for bulky layers, shelves for bags. Soft-sided drawers are lighter and fold away; rigid ones stack higher and hold their shape.

Buying closet storage before you measure is how you end up with a shelf unit that blocks the rod, or a bin that won't fit the shelf you already have. Ten minutes with a tape measure saves a return.

Measure three numbers first

  • Interior width — wall to wall inside the closet, not the door opening.
  • Rod to floor — this decides how tall a drawer tower can be and still let hangers swing.
  • Depth to the back wall — leave an inch or two so folded stacks don't rub the door.

If the closet is shallow, build upward instead of outward: closet shelves and stacked drawer units use height rather than depth.

Match the format to what you're storing

  • Folded clothes and bulky items: shelves and drawer towers.
  • Bags, scarves, belts: hanging organizers that use the empty air above the rod.
  • Small loose items in drawers you already own: dividers — usually the cheapest fix per square foot.

Soft-sided or rigid drawer units?

A fabric drawer dresser with an iron frame sits in the middle: the steel frame stops drawers from sagging when they're full, and the fabric body stays light enough to move on your own. Working to an entry-level budget, the non-woven fabric drawer cabinet covers the same footprint — just keep heavy items in the lower drawers.

For bags and purses, structure beats stacking. An acrylic bag and purse organizer drops onto an existing shelf and keeps handles from tangling into each other.

Last step: measure the tallest thing you plan to store, then buy. If it won't fit the shelf you have, no organizer will fix that.
